2. Stock Reservation by Marketplace
Best Practices to Prevent Overselling
2. Use the Flash Sale Feature in OMS
Introduction
Overselling in the marketplace is usually caused by two major issues:
1. Marketplace Restrictions
- Marketplaces sometimes apply restrictions such as limiting stock updates or preventing new product listings.
2. Stock Reservation by Marketplace
- Some marketplaces hold or reserve product quantities on their end, limiting your control over inventory availability.
Best Practices to Prevent Overselling
1. Follow SKU Standardization
One of the biggest causes of overselling is mismatched SKU codes between your marketplace and your OMS/WMS.
Here’s how you can avoid that:
- List SKUs via OMS Always list your SKUs from the OMS. It ensures automatic linking with the WMS and marketplace, enabling smoother syncing.
- Perform Product & Stock Sync If you are not listing via OMS, make sure to perform a product sync in OMS for the marketplace. Do not change SKUs directly on the marketplace! OMS will treat the updated SKU as a new product, creating duplicates.
- Use Standard CSKU & ISKU Maintain consistent SKU codes across all marketplaces. If you use different inventory SKUs in your warehouse, ensure CSKU and ISKU are correctly mapped.
- Ensure All SKUs Are Unique Whether it’s group products, variants, or singles—each SKU must be unique for seamless syncing of stock, product data, and orders.
Recommendation: Always add or modify SKUs through OMS only.
2. Use the Flash Sale Feature in OMS
- The Flash Sale tool in OMS allows you to assign stock to specific marketplaces ahead of sales events, preventing accidental overselling.
Types of Flash Sale Setups:
- Stock Allocation Allocate a specific quantity of stock to a single marketplace. This stock is not shared with others while the promotion is live.
- Stock Reservation Reserve a portion of stock for a marketplace. The rest gets distributed to other marketplaces. The reserved marketplace can access total stock (if still available).
